SMILER

Serious games as emerging e-health interventions for young people with neurological or respiratory disorders

The project SMILER aims to design, develop and evaluate an innovative “Serious Game” (SG) as a digital therapeutics to assist a vulnerable population, such as children with chronic diseases. Despite their diverse aetiology and clinical characteristics, Down Syndrome (DS), a mono-genetic disorder, and Asthma (A), a polygenic and environment-linked disorder, are chronic diseases both presenting clinical disturbances related to immune/inflammatory and neurobehavioral patterns. First, the project develops a SG aimed at improving physical activity (PA) and psychosocial experience levels in children with DS or A. Then, the impact of the SG on physical and neurobehavioral patterns through two pilot randomized controlled trials in children with DS and in those with A is assessed. Moreover, we will also assess the impact of SG on transcriptome profiling of a gene pattern, namely “Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity” (CTRA). Finally, the project aim is to create an innovative Digital Therapy Marker (DTM) based on Digital Literacy (DL) and Digital Compliance (DC) in human-machine interaction for Digital Therapy (DT).
