Mobile VR Museum

The system allows a visitor to take a virtual tour of one of the floors of the Capodimonte museum, which has been virtually reconstructed by photogrammetry. The prototype is based on a mobile Virtual Reality technology, which today is attracting a lot of interest thanks to the release of display kits called “headsets” that allow you to live an immersive virtual reality experience by exploiting the potential of visitors’ smartphones. The goal was to make the user an active subject in the interaction with the virtual reconstructions of the museum pieces. She/he can move around the museum, select artwork to obtain more information and interact with multimedia content. Virtual tours also make it possible to exhibit a cultural heritage that would otherwise be inaccessible for various reasons (fragility of the work, restoration, and distance). The desktop version of the system was installed inside the Maschio Angioino in Naples, Italy, from 12 December 2015 to 12 December 2016.
