Smart Underground

Accessibility of Cultural Heritage Sites

The Smart Underground project had the aim, using the latest generation technology, of making any cultural site accessible, mainly for disabled visitors, both in terms of the use of services and in terms of the fruition of cultural content. The technologies used are minimally invasive, with zero impact on the infrastructure of the cultural heritage. In greater detail, the project solution is based on the development of three basic technologies: localization via beacons, augmented reality vision, and multi-channel interaction (touch, gestures, vocals). The project developed a complete solution for a specific site, the “Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore della Pietrasanta”, which due to its structural complexity (dislocated on three levels, basilica, crypt and underground path) and its richness in cultural terms, lends itself naturally to the integration of new technological tools for complete and accessible use.
