abstract = {Recent advances in computer science allowed people to explore new possibilities for the fruition of CH all around the world. The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the field of territorial systems and the evolution of Virtual Reality (VR) solutions opened new scenarios for the valorization of cultural goods. At the same time, recent advances in digital photogrammetry and 3D interactive navigation models on WEB-based on WebGL technologies offered new opportunities of digital fruition of CH. Considering this panorama, the presented work shows how the integration of these technologies gives a precious added value to the virtual fruition of CH. In particular, it has been considered a cultural path in the La Loggia district, located into the historic centre of Palermo. This area is rich in monuments, many of them not accessible to the public, within the I-ACCESS European Project. The starting idea was to enlarge and diffuse, as much as possible, the accessibility to the knowledge of cultural goods in a virtual way, stimulating at the same time their real fruition. The developed solution implemented a GIS platform HTML 5 based and freely available online from desktop and mobile devices. In the virtual tour, everyone could navigate inside the cultural path, accompanied by touristic information, and come and visit the indoor environments of the main monuments. This work offers a new approach to accessibility and represents an example of how new technologies could support the diffusion of knowledge of CH. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.},

abstract = {The last achievements of technologies in geomatics especially in survey and restitution of 3D models (UAV/drones andlaser scanner technologies) generated new procedures and higher standards of quality in representation of archaeological sites. Together with Geomatics, the recent development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) strongly contribute to document and the Cultural Heritage (CH). The representation and documentation of CH using these new technologies has became necessary in orderto satisfy different needs: -for restorers in order to acquire a deep knowledge of the cultural good and to define possible strategiesof restoration; -for the conservation of information, allowing to preserve the 3D geometry of the monumental complex with the integration of descriptions about architectural elements; -for touristic aims, giving the opportunity of sharing CH information on web, allowing users to visit and explore, in a virtual way,monumental complexes, acquiring information details about architectural elementsorthe history of monumental complex. Looking through these new scenarios, the development of a 3D Geographic Information System (GIS) applied to a cultural good could be,today,an added value of fundamental importance for full description and data managementof monumental complexes. In this work,the main features necessary for the correct construction of a 3D GIS of a monumental complex will be analyzed, with a particular focus on the possibilities for creating a standardized procedure to follow.},

abstract = {Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are essential systems to support decisions on territorial and environmental aspects. But they not always have been properly used for this purpose. Only in recent years GIS have been getting better used for the planning, management and control of the territory. The application of GIS to the transport sector has become relevant both for management and decision-making in support of Public Administration (PA) and citizens. GIS are particularly useful for roads and routing graphs management capabilities as well as for searching the most suitable path. The results achieved in this research activity aimed to evaluate different road graphs, proprietary and free ones, in order to compare calculated distances and travel times. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.},

abstract = {The importance of geospatial information delivery, across Internet, is increasing more and more. But if in the last years was satisfying to get 2D geographic information, from Internet browsers, extracted by http servers supported by map servers, today users would acquire 3D information especially in some case or sectors as that of building cadastral applications or civil protection. In this case availability of 3D information could be very valuable. But behind this need there exist many important aspects that today are only partially resolved as the definition of 3D geospatial web services that are connected and are dependent on some other aspects (i.e. the standardization of 3D geographic data models). The experimentation carried out deals with these issues, trying to define a 3D web service in order to visualize and query by Internt Browser 3D model of the built environment. Actually there are few 3D data models (such as CityGML) whose standard definition process is not complete. Besides these models are built with main requirement of 3D visualization even if at different level of detail. But some sectors require a better use of geographic 3D information such as querying at different level of detail (such as at a level regarding the different building parts defined through their attributes) and 3D processing. Based on a project named "Interoperability and cooperative management of geographic, dynamic, multidimensional and distributed data with Free and Open Source GIS: Management and use of distributed 3D data by open source Web-GIS software" funded by Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research as Program of Relevant National Interest (PRIN 2007), it is here illustrated a part of a process, that start from the construction of a Java plugin that initially consist in reading information directly from a relational database management server with spatial extension, and ends with the construction of an application server which is based the extraction of GML 3D data, all based on the existence of a 3D geospatial web service whose definition is one the last and main goal of the research. © 2010 ISPRS Archives.},

abstract = {Today many kinds of applications requires data containing actual three-dimensional data; fields like urban and town planning and pollution studies need 3D data, both for visualization purpose, as well as carry out many spatial analysis. This research-Management and use of distributed 3D data by open source Web-GIS software-is part of the Italian "PRIN 2007"∗ research project, aimed to build urban and suburban 3D models, and to interact with them using open source software only. Particularly free and open source software, used for the experimentation here shown, are Blender and PostGIS; the first one has been used to build and structure three-dimensional data, the second one for data allocation. These software interact using scripts, written in Python language. Buildings have been modeled upon the GIANT3D model (Geographical Interoperable Advanced Numerical Topological 3-Dimensional Model) developed in the research "PRIN 2004", regarding "Evolved structure of numerical cartography for Gis and Web-GIS". Python scripts, activated by Blender, allow to allocate data into a spatial database implemented through PostgreSQL and PostGis, that could be a remote database somewhere on the net; all geometrical and topological information, implemented in the 3D model, are so transferred in PostGIS. These information can be retrieved by Blender using other Python scripts, so Blender fully interacts with 3D data allocated in PostGIS. These data can be also accessed by many other clients, both directly using a database client, as using other protocols (like HTTP on the internet). Next step is to build an open source viewer, or a plugin for internet browsers, that allows client to visualize, explore and inquiry 3D model, retrieving data from database.},

abstract = {In these last years employment and spreading of GPS real-time kinematic techniques is greatly improved. Its application field is extended from traditional topographic surveys to environmental applications. In this work a monitoring project of electromagnetic pollution is shown; this project has been carried out in order to realize an infrastructure of measurement, transmissions, elaboration and management of surveyed data. In particular, the results of a research about the realization of a first prototype of advanced system based on the integration of GPS receivers and other sensors are shown. The research has been carried out in collaboration with "Dipartimento di Ricerche Energetiche ed Ambientali" of University of Palermo and with the "Laboratorio di Fisica ARPA Regione Sicilia". The experimentation has been carried out using a car equipped with roof rack where both an antenna and electromagnetic sensor were installed. The GPS survey was carried out by a integrated palmtop-GPS, linked with an analyser of electromagnetic spectrum, in broadband or not. Well than, a GIS has been created in order to show some thematic maps which represent the distribution of electromagnetic pollution and accuracy positioning. © 2008 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. abstract = {Archaeology is one of the sectors that can benefit by new surveying techniques (i.e. those ones related to the use of GPS) for the representation and the management of an archaeological site. Another aspect of the archaeological sector that can take advantage from the use of both GPS and GIS instruments is guided visits of archaeological sites. Today, during visits in museums, visitors often use some electronic equipments as sound players, special headsets or personal computers equipped with multimedia applications. All this is possible because archaeological goods are in a relatively small covered area, where there are also people that can help the visitor at every time. On the opposite, about visiting open archaeological sites, some other problems or needs come out connected to the big dimension of the area, to the scattered distribution of archaeological goods and to meteorological conditions. So enjoying the site with traditional electronics equipment become impossible. On the contrary both Pocket GPSs and PocketPCs, connected together, May be very useful if used for multimedia guided visits of archaeological sites. This paper treats of the creation of a GIS multimedia guide running on PocketPC connected to a Pocket GPS by the Bluetooth interface, developed with Enhanced Visual Basic.
